Obituary for Brian Emmanuel Devezin

Brian Emmanuel Devezin
Brian Emmanuel Devezin born July 23, 1957, was the youngest son of Pearl Boucree Devezin and the late Dr. Armond A. Devezin. Brian lived a Christian life in service to others and is known for stepping up to assist family, friends, and strangers in need. Brian attended St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, Louisiana, but relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee with his parents. He graduated from West High School in Knoxville where he met Vickie Lynn Hamilton who later became his loving wife. Vickie and Brian had one son, Brian, II. After high school, Brian enlisted in the United States Navy. There he became a dental equipment repair technician. Completing his Navy tour, he enrolled at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. Brian reunited with Vickie during her visit to New Orleans, married her, and relocated to Memphis, Tennessee where he embarked on a career with the City of Memphis Fire Service. During his 26 years as a fire fighter, Brian learned his craft expertly and became a role-model for young men and women entering the profession. As one young fire fighter said, "if I were in a tough situation, Brian would be the colleague I would want to come in to get me." As testament to Brian's willingness to serve others, he received the Life Saver Medal Award for pulling a civilian from an explosive fire. He often spoke of his love for his work and his fellow fire fighters in the Department. He was proud of the nickname "Cajun" he was called by some of his fire fighter colleagues because his love of cooking authentic dishes from New Orleans for them. His last position held was Fireman-Driver-Station 8. Some of Brian's favorite hobbies were fishing, bowling, cooking, playing chess, and sharing his skills with others. He had a gift for understanding the mechanical structure of things and could repair almost any item. He was most proud of being a father and husband. His caring, helping, supporting spirit will be missed by all he touched. Affectionately called "Fats" or "B" or "Cajun" family and friends, Brian departed his life on earth on March 27, 2018, shortly after he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Left to mourn his absence from our lives are his wife Vickie Lynn Hamilton Devezin; son, Brian, II.; mother, Pearl Boucree Devezin; brothers, Armand (Glenda) and Tyrone Devezin; god-daughter, Virgie L. Chaffen; god-granddaughter, Morgan Munn; god-son, Marico Isom (Mellissa); god-grandson, Marico Isom, II; sisters-in-law, Teresa Gray and Deborah Bolton; nephews, Armand Jr., Brandon, Tristan; nieces, Lisa, Dominique; and many uncles, aunts, great nephews and nieces, cousins, friends, and brothers and sisters in the Memphis Fire Service. Services will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018, at St. Genevieve Catholic Church, 58203 LA 433, Slidell, LA 70460. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM. Services will begin at 10:15 and Mass will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery with a repast at St. Genevieve Church Hall.
