Myrtle Z. Labat Charbonnet, Owner of Charbonnet Funeral Homes, one of the oldest African-American Funeral Homes in New Orleans Dies at the age of 101
Myrtle Z. Labat Charbonnet, the owner of Charbonnet Labat Glapion Funeral Home went on to her final rest at the age of 101 on the morning of Tuesday, June 19, 2007. Myrtle born on June 9, 1906, inherited the family funeral home business that was established in 1883. Myrtle married Louis Charbonnet, Jr. and together they created Charbonnet Labat Funeral Home. The Charbonnet Labat Funeral Home, located in the Treme, the oldest African-American neighborhood in the country, grew from a small business into one of the most prominent African-American owned businesses in the South. The funeral home operated 2 locations including Glapion Funeral Home located in the lower ninth ward. In June of 2006 Myrtle celebrated her 100th birthday and cut the ribbon to a new era as Charbonnet Labat Glapion Funeral Home celebrated a new beginning in a renovated million-dollar facility. Her memberships include the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Peter Claver - Court 50: Crescent City Funeral Director’s Association (CCFDA), the ladies Auxiliary of the CCFDA. The family invites the community, colleagues and friends to come out and celebrate Myrtle’s life on Monday, June 25, 2007 and Tuesday, June 26, 2007. Myrtle Charbonnet will lie in state on Monday, June 25 from 10:00 AM – 6: 00 PM in the Charbonnet Funeral Home Family Center located at 1615 St. Philip Street. A commemoration, including musical tributes and a rosary will take place from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM. The funeral services will take place on June 26 at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church located at 1923 Saint Philip St New Orleans, LA. Visitation is from 9:00 A M – 11:00 AM with the funeral mass starting at 11:00 AM.
